Traditional Tunes
Old and New: Up da stroods is a traditional Shetland reel. I was inspired to arrange it after hearing it off the album One Two by Jenna Moynihan and Mairi Chaimbeul. The second reel was written by Rob Taylor during our time at Edinburgh Youth Orchestra. James Macmillan’s percussion concerto ‘Veni Veni Emmanuel’ was the catalyst for Rob Taylor’s reel, and both have elements of the hymn.
Bird’s Nest is a tune by Canadian folk band The Fretless, who are a constant source of inspiration for me when arranging for string quartet. They have mastered the art of chopping, a technique where you strike the strings with the bow to create a snare effect, great for rhythm and groove.
Nordic Set: the first tune in this set is Norrsken by the Finnish-Norwegian band Frigg off their album Timeline, which I discovered during my time in Stockholm. The second tune was written during the ‘Snow-mageddon’ months in 2018 and the name ‘Bell Street’ refers to a certain block of Glasgow houses where we were living without central heating. The final tune ‘Come West Along the Road’ is a traditional Irish reel. I first heard it off the album Under The Moon by Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill.
