Mark Hutchinson studied music at the University of York to PhD level, specialising in contemporary music, composition, oboe and piano accompaniment; his thesis explored novel approaches to analysis, communication and metaphor in post-1980s new music. He is a lecturer at the University of York, where he leads the MA in Piano Studies, teaches about contemporary music, runs the department Piano Ensemble, and accompanies student recitals. He is also a lecturer at York St John University.
In the last year he has performed a concert of British song with the tenor Chris O’Gorman; played concerts of Mendelssohn and Victorian music on a historical piano in Lotherton Hall; led York St John students and staff in a performance of Frederic Rzewski’s experimental work Coming Together; and given performances of Schumann, Martinů, Berg and Dutilleux with final-year University of York undergraduate students.
