Matt Dibble

30th January 2023

Matt Dibble was born and lived in Southeast London. He studied music at the University of York where he was the concerto soloist in 2002, playing the Finzi Clarinet Concerto, and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under clarinet teachers Alan Hacker and Tony Coe respectively.

He was a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, arranger and producer, releasing six albums . His posthumous album Bedroom Pop is due to be released this year. He was co-founder of the current band Super dB. One of their songs, ‘ Kool Funk ‘ was #2 on the UK so chart in June July 2020 and had radio play on the BBC, and internationally.
As a composer he wrote everything from pop songs, mentioned above, to fugues and jazz numbers. Among these are a Choral piece, a String Quartet and various piano and jazz instrumental compositions, one of which which is the haunting ‘Miles to Go’ for tenor sax and piano, which features on his album Daytime TV. He finished the 24 Préludes and Fugues a short while before his tragic and untimely death in 2021, as a result of a fatal reaction to the AstraZeneca vaccine.
He played clarinet, sax, piano and sang in the punk jazz band Dollyman, and played clarinet on the Dibble Zambelli albums with Italian guitarist Fabio Zambelli. He also played various gigs with different lineups such as the Klezmer band, The Matzoh Boys, The Night and Day Collective, with singer-songwriter Lewis Barfoot and  was a member of a jazz Trio with Terence Collier and Nick Lenner- Webster and of the highly regarded Beach Boys tribute band, Beach Boys Smile.
He taught piano, clarinet, sax and composition at the Britt school, Sound of Music Summer School, Junior Trinity, the Michael Tippett School and the Rose Bruford School.
He enjoyed working alone composing, but was also  a brilliant performer, who gave generously on stage and was, according to his fellow musicians, inspirational and enormous  fun to play with.
